Several Eastern Shore publications highlight the late Talbot County, Maryland, artist Ruth Starr Rose (1887-1965), among them Shore Life , Sacred Art Pilgrim and The Star Democrat. If you haven’t read them, be sure to check them out.
Browsing the articles and images I was struck by the early Harlem Renaissance quality of her art, a reflection of her time and studies in New York. All the articles speak to her progressive images of the black community. And the Shore Life article referred to her writings of the 1930s, of “injustices and atrocities around her and how her sympathies propelled her art.” I would love to read those writings.
