I wish I knew more about this little community located in Somerset County, Maryland, near Upper Fairmount — a small historically black community known as Upper Hill. Afterall, as the sign says, it is “a community that cares” and one that apparently thrived since about 1863.
The 1877 Atlas of this area shows several communities. Today, the larger communities are known as Fairmount and Upper Fairmount. But the 1877 Atlas shows two other communities, one of which is today Upper Hill.
The two communities were Upper Freetown and Lower Freetown. If anyone from those area could tell me more, please let me know. –Linda Duyer
